NHTSA Issues Consumer Alert on Aftermarket Steering Wheel Decals

Decals have injured drivers after airbags deploy.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued another warning to consumers not to use or buy aftermarket steering wheel decals. Many of these decorations, which include rhinestones or other shiny objects, are made to be placed over the vehicle’s logo in the center of the steering wheel. The agency knows of two drivers who suffered serious injuries from plastic or metal emblems during a collision.

The agency reported the most recent driver “was involved in a crash in which the air bag deployed and sent two pieces of a metal aftermarket decal with rhinestones into the person’s face and neck.“

In a separate crash incident, the NHTSA said, “The driver lost sight in one eye after the rhinestone-adorned decal dislodged from the steering wheel and hit the driver in the face.“

The agency stated, “In a crash, the force of a deploying air bag can turn the product into a projectile, resulting in serious injury or death.“

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For wisdom for Deputy Administrator Sophie Shulman as she heads the NHTSA.
  • For U.S. transportation safety officials as they endeavor to protect American drivers from harm on the roads.
